In 2014, an overhaul of BHP’s business model led the company to divest from most of its mining assets in West Africa. These retrocessions paved the way for CMC's acquisition of Block No. #372 (formerly the westernmost portion of Block No. #17). CMC was granted an exploration permit for the block in Q4 2015 after being supported by the Guinean government's commitment to promote the participation of Guinean nationals in the country’s mining sector. By Q4 2016, CMC had applied for and was granted a second exploration permit in the Boké region (Block #124), which was developed as the joint-venture GDM.
